Blue Angels Show Flash Of Potential

MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary University lost to Silver Lake College in an epic 3-2 match. The Blue Angels wouldn't be able to get things going after the close match as they lost to Northland International University.

The first match switched momentum with every serve, consequently, the sets went from Silver Lake to Mount Mary and vice versa until the last point. The Lakers held on in a 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12 match.

Sarah Wishau (Sr./Oak Creek) led the way for the Blue Angels with 17 kills, and 27 hard fought digs that saved multiple points for Mount Mary University. Payton Hintz (Fr./Almond, Wis.) turned up her intensity on the serve line as she tacked on five serve aces, and facilitated her teammates with a MMU leading 32 assists.

Abby Gerhard (So./Iron Mountain, Mich.) and Courtney Clavers (Jr./Brillion, Wis.) led the Silver Lake Lakers with 12 kills each. Gerhard also added three serve aces to lead the Lakers along with Danielle Byrum (Fr./Sheboygan, Wis.). Byrum was setting up her team and led the game with 40 assists.

Northland International University was next on the docket for the Blue Angels, and despite winning the first set, the Navy Halos couldn't hang on. Wishau led again with seven kills for MMU. Hintz would leave the game in the fourth set with a minor injury, yet she still finished with a team leading 13 assists.

Hanna Cole (So./Pittsburg, Pa.) led the Pioneers with 17 kills. Liz Humburg was the maestro as she led the game with 25 assists. The Pioneers dropped the first set, but got things together on the attack and won the next three sets, two of which they came back from behind. Northland International held on to win 17-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-19.

The Illinois Institute of Technology won the two neutral site games 3-0 to Northland and 3-0 to Silver Lake College.

The next match for the Navy Halos will be Sept. 23 at Indiana University Northwest beginning at 7:00 pm. That will start a 10 day stretch on the road for MMU a couple stops in Michigan.
