Lions Win Tourney Finale

HANCOCK, Mich. – Today at the Finlandia Tournament, the Mount Mary University volleyball team lost to Gogebic Community College in an exhibition match 3-0 and then lost to host Finlandia 3-0. The match against Gogebic, a junior college from the NJCAA, does not count towards the Blue Angels statistics or win/loss record. The loss against the Lions makes the Blue Angels 2-13.

Gogebic battled the Blue Angels for each set in their 3-0 win. The first two sets went for extra points as GCC held on 31-29, 29-27. The accuracy from Gogebic helped carry them to the win, the team finished with a precise .194 hitting percentage. Mandy Perrault led the match with 15 kills and only five attack errors which helped Gogebic win the last set 25-13 for the win.

The Blue Angels were led by Katy Carlson (Fr./Whitewater, Wis.) in the first match with 10 kills and finished with an accurate .189 hitting percentage. Her teammate Julia Terasa (Jr./Waukesha, Wis.) led the Blue Angels with 16 digs.

The second match saw the host Lions take control early on. The Lions finished the first set with 12 kills against the Blue Angels one, and finished with a score of 25-17.

The next set saw Finlandia finish with a day high .300 hitting percentage, and 14 team kills which led to a 25-16 win. The last set saw the Lions finish ahead 25-14 and the match.

Katelyn Anderson led the Lions with six kills. Her teammate Nicole Anderson took points from behind the line with six service aces to lead the game.

Lauren Harris (Fr./Sheridan, Ill.) and Carlson each had three kills each to led the Blue Angels in their second match. Rachel Barker (So./Milwaukee, Wis.) led the defense with two total blocks.

Following the Finlandia Tournament, the Blue Angels will get ready to face old Association of Division III Independents rival Maranatha Baptist University. The Sabercats are 14-5 with a 25 set winning streak coming into the game against MMU which is set for Tues. Oct. 13 beginning at 7:00 pm on the Maranatha Baptist campus.
