Inferno Take Opener Over Blue Angels

Inferno Take Opener Over Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – Tonight at the Reiman Gymnasium, the Mount Mary University Volleyball Team began their season. Their rival Alverno came away with the 3-0 match win in the season opener.

The Blue Angels came out anxious to get their first game of the season underway. Looking to reduce the defensive struggles, and focus more on the serve-receive part of their game, MMU team worked hard all offseason to do just that.

In the first set, the Blue Angels fell behind to multiple service aces by Jessica Wiewers. The Inferno jumped up to a quick 5-0 lead until the Blue Angels got their first point. MMU continued to cut away, but the Inferno attack continued to a 25-8 set win for Alverno.

MMU continued the attack into the second set, and cut down their errors from eight in set one, to one error in set two. After the set was tied 2-2, Alverno rattled off six straight points to take the lead. A lead which the Blue Angels cut to four at one point, but the Inferno kept the offensive attack and came away with a 25-14 set victory.

The final set, the Blue Angels showed their fight as they never gave in to the big leads. Down 13-3 in the third, the Blue Angels took six straight points with new comer Alyssa Nelson serving the plays. Going back and forth, the Blue Angels cut the lead down and were battling as the score was 21-19. The Inferno steadied the attack from MMU and came away with a 25-21 win in the third set.

Lauren Harris (So./Sheridan, Ill.) led the MMU attack with a team high six kills, nine digs and a kill percentage of .214. Freshman Melanie Coffey (Cedarburg, Wis.) was right behind Harris with four kills of her own.

Now the Blue Angels will prepare for their home opener against Association of Division III Independents foe Finlandia. The match will be held at the Bloechl Center on Labor Day (Sept. 5) beginning at 6:00 pm. Check out all the action live via video and stats at mtmaryathletics.com.
