Blue Angels Get 3-0 Win Over Regents

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Volleyball Team defeated visiting Rockford 3-0 in their match tonight at the Bloechl Center. MMU is now 1-2 on the season, while the Regents are 0-4 as they still search for their first victory of 2016.

In the first two sets, the Blue Angels took control early. A quick 5-0 lead in the first gave the Blue Angels the edge they needed to carry the first set. Although the Regents tied up the set two separate times, the Blue Angels weathered the storm in the first and held on to a 25-21 win for set one.

The second set, the Blue Angels jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The Regents stormed back taking a lead at 9-8 when new comer Melanie Coffey (Fr./Cedarburg, Wis.) took over serving and steered the ship back to a lead including a service ace from the freshman that energized the team to take the set 25-15.

In the final frame, the Blue Angels and Regents went back and forth with seven lead changes. An early server streak from Lauren Harris (So./Sheridan, Ill.) gave MMU a comfortable 10-2 lead, but the Regents nipped away at the score to tie it up.

The Blue Angels took control after the 17-17 tie and did not surrender the lead after that point. Taking charge defensively, the Blue Angels forced multiple errors on their way to a 25-22 win to complete the match sweep.

Harris led the Blue Angels with eight kills on 32 attacks. Teammate Rachel Barker (Jr./Milwaukee, Wis.) chipped in with four kills, three service aces, and a block assist and block solo.

Following the win tonight, the Blue Angels will prepare for a triangular in Dubuque, Iowa featuring Dayspring Bible College and Emmaus Bible College. MMU begins play in the triangular Fri. Sept.9 at 2:00 pm. Stay tuned to mtmaryathetlics.com for updates.
