Blue Angels Drop Doubleheader

Blue Angels Drop Doubleheader

WYOMING, Mich. – The Mount Mary University Volleyball team lost both matches in their doubleheader at the Grace Bible Triangular today at the Aldrich Athletic Center. MMU lost their first match 3-1 against Lake Michigan College (7-7), then lost a 3-0 match to host Grace Bible College in the triangular's finale.

The Blue Angels traded points with LMC in the first three sets. In the first set, MMU focused on accurate attacks from the front of the net, and cashed in with six team kills and seven team errors. The Red Hawks similarly focused on the accuracy of their attacks and bested the Blue Angels with a 25-20 set off of 11 kills and three team errors.

After LMC took the second set 25-18, MMU turned around and started the third set rattling off five straight points with Payton Hintz (Jr./Almond, Wis.) serving and scoring two service aces in the streak. Although the Red Hawks battled their way back to a lead, the stubborn Blue Angels finished off the set with nine team kills and four errors to take the set 25-21.

The third set LMC took a big 16-3 lead and coasted to the 25-12 match winning set.

Blue Angel Katy Carlson (So./Whitewater, Wis.) led the attack with six kills off of 18 total attacks. Teammates Sarah Amoroso (Jr./Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Adrianna Nester (Fr./Anaheim, Calif.) each dished out four kills in the match.

The triangular's final game saw a different lineup for MMU. A libero switch from Marissa Tun (Jr./Greenfield, Wis.) to Kalyn Jarrett (So./La Porte, Ind.)  gave the Blue Angels a different look to close out the day against the Tigers.

Grace Bible started off the match with a very accurate attack with nine team kills and only one team error in the opening set. The Tigers trailed 3-2 and then ran away with the set connecting on a .296 clip from their attack and winning the frame 25-12.

The Tigers took the second set 25-11 and then the Blue Angels fired up for the third and final set of the day. The Blue Angels held a 6-4 lead in the third, before Grace Bible sent Ashley Bearden to serve at which point the Tigers would take the lead and never surrender it again. MMU had their best set of the night with six team kills and six team errors.

Lauren Harris (So./Sheridan, Ill.) led the Blue Angels offense with six kills in the final match. Teammate Payton Hintz led MMU with three service aces for her team.

Following today, the Blue Angels will get ready for Silver Lake this Tues. Sept. 20 at the Bloechl Center. The Lakers and MMU will begin play at 7:00 pm and will have live stats and video at mtmaryathletics.com.
