Lakers Take Victory

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University volleyball team lost tonight's match against host Silver Lake College (3-10). The Blue Angels are now 0-4 on the young season, but received a resurgent effort throughout the second set that kept the game close.

The Lakers came prepared for the first set as they took an early 5-1 lead. Never relenting, Silver Lake was able to get six team kills on 13 total attacks with just one team error throughout that entire first set. Attacking with nine Blue Angel errors in the opening frame gave way to a 1-0 lead for SLC after a 25-10 set.

In the second set, the Blue Angels hit the court rejuvenated. SLC went up 5-1 quickly, but MMU fought back for the lead. With a 15-13 lead, a hefty dose of Payton Hintz (Sr./Almond, Wis.) service aces stifled Silver Lake's comeback and gave MMU a 20-14. The Blue Angels took that to a 25-15 set win.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in the third frame. Each squad held the lead, but the Lakers continued to serve well in the third to extend the margin. Tied 5-5, a long run from the Lakers at the hands of Hannah Serverin pushed things to 12-5 with SLC ahead. The Lakers tried to quickly end the set, but a long stretch of serving from Melanie Coffey (So./Cedarburg, Wis.) cut that lead down, however, SLC held on for the 25-19 set win.

The Lakers carried that momentum over into the fourth and final frame where they grabbed an 8-1 lead. Despite the Blue Angels cutting the deficit to two points at 12-10, the Lakers extend the lead once more and go on a 13-5 run to end the game.

Payton Hintz led the Blue Angels with four service aces, all four coming in the second set. Teammate Lauren Harris (Jr./Sheridan, Ill.) led the Blue Angels offensive attack with seven kills on 21 total attacks and added four service aces at the line.

Marissa Tun (Jr./Greenfield, Wis.) led MMU again from her libero spot as she kept the back court clean with nine digs.

The Blue Angels will rest up and then prepare for Faith Baptist Bible College (3-6) this Saturday. The match set for Sept. 16 is set for a 1:00 pm first serve.
