Bucs/Inferno Get Win

BELOIT, Wis. – Today at the Flood Arena, the Mount Mary University volleyball team lost both their matches at the Beloit College Triangular. In the first match, the host Buccaneers (5-9) won 3-0, then the Blue Angels (0-8) lost 3-0 to rival Alverno College (6-8) in the finale.

The Blue Angels took the lead early in the first set of match one. Jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead, MMU could not maintain it throughout the set. Beloit began to attack accurately with 15 team kills and one error on 28 total attacks. BC used that accuracy to carry a 1-0 match score going into the second set.

MMU came out with a revitalized demeanor in the second set of action against the Bucs. Although Beloit jumped out to the early lead, the Blue Angels came storming back from down four to take a 10-9 lead.

Timely hitting by the Blue Angels yielded an 18-12 lead for MMU. A strategic timeout for the Bucs during the long streak turned the tables and sparked a 13-3 rally for Beloit. Following the turnaround, the Blue Angels trailed 2-0 going into the third set.

In the final set, the Bucs continued the aggressive attack with 10 team kills on 22 total attacks. MMU was able to respond a few times, but BC came away with the 25-9 winning set.

Marissa Tun (Jr./Greenfield, Wis.) steadied the Blue Angels offense in the first set with a team leading three kills and one assist on 14 total attacks.

In match two, the Blue Angels dropped behind, but started a comeback effort cutting a 5-point deficit down to just three. The Inferno received a boost from their front line, most notably Jessica Wewers, and the Inferno took the first set 25-14.

Alverno had one of their most accurate sets of the season in the second set against MMU. The Inferno had 12 team kills and three errors on 22 total attacks. The Blue Angels did their best to withstand the accurate hitting, but down 10-6, Alverno went on a 15-2 run to end the set and grabbed a 2-0 lead on the match.

The last set saw the Blue Angels put together their most aggressive attack of the day. MMU had seven team kills and 11 errors on their 33 total attacks in the final set. The Blue Angels were not able to attain the lead in the set, and with three early service aces for the Inferno, the Inferno were able to ride their early lead to a 25-12 final.

Lauren Harris (Jr./Sheridan, Ill.) led the Blue Angels attack in the second match. The junior finished the contest with six kills on 24 total attacks and one block solo. Teammate Payton Hintz (Sr./Almond, Wis.) led the Blue Angels with four assists in that second contest.

The Blue Angels will quickly return to action on Tue. Sept. 26 when they head down the road to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College (4-9). These two teams have not met on the hardwood since September of 2010. This year's contest will have live video and stats available courtesy of the WLC Athletic Department.
