WYOMING, Mich. – The Mount Mary University volleyball team lost to host Grace Bible College today at the Grace Bible Quad. The Tigers won 25-8, 25-18 and 25-12 for their 3-0 match win. GBC is now 11-8 on the season as the Blue Angels move to 0-16 on the 2017 campaign.
Trading leads very early in the opening set, the two teams jockeyed for position until MMU made things 6-5 in favor of the Tigers. Then GBC went on a 19-3 run to end the set. A very accurate set for the Eagles as they hit seven team kills with zero errors on their 19 total attacks in the opening frame.
In the second the Blue Angels picked up their offense with their most effective frame of the night. MMU struck five kills and four errors on 28 total attacks. The bulk of that attack came from the service line as the Blue Angels posted five service aces in the set; both Marissa Tun (Jr./Greenfield, Wis.) and Payton Hintz (Sr./Almond, Wis.) had a pair of aces in the set.
MMU chipped away at the second set lead for the Tigers and pressured GBC at 20-18, but the Tigers were able to stem the tide as they closed out the frame on a 5-0 run for the 25-18 winning set.
As the teams continued to battle throughout the third set, the Tigers grabbed the early lead, and while MMU cut things to two, FBC slowly expanded that lead for a 25-12 win. The Tigers hit 13 team kills and three errors on 29 total attacks in the set; the Blue Angels hit four team kills and four errors on 20 total attacks.
Adrianna Nester (So./Anaheim, Calif.) led the Blue Angels offensive charge with five kills on 10 total attacks. Teammate Marissa Tun led the Blue Angels in digs while rookie Johnelle Suto (Fr./Enterprise, Ore.) led MMU with seven assists.
Following today's match, the Blue Angels will return home and prepare for North Central University (1-19). The Rams come to town Fri. Oct. 20 for a 7:00 pm contest against the Blue Angels. Live stats and video will be made available at mtmaryathletics.com.
