Bucs Defeat Blue Angels

BELOIT, Wis. – The Mount Mary University volleyball team lost to host Beloit College tonight at the Flood Arena. The Buccaneers won the match 3-0 and now move to 5-8 while the Blue Angels are now 1-7 on the 2018 season.

In the first set, the Buccaneers took a 7-0 lead. A kill from newcomer Alexis Levenhagen (Fr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) squashed the streak from Beloit and put the Blue Angels on the board. The Blue Angels continued to attack, but the Buccaneers held on for the 25-14 winning set.

In the next frame, the Blue Angels took the early lead. This time a kill from senior Lauren Harris (Sheridan, Ill.) started the set's scoring out. Then the Blue Angels crept out to a 4-3 lead. After a 6-1 run by Beloit, MMU could not regain the lead again in the set. Following a couple runs, the Buccaneers came a way with a 25-14 winning second set.

In the final set of the day, the Blue Angels fell behind, but tied things at 2-2. The teams continued to trade position until they tied things at 9-9, then Beloit started a 6-1 run that stretched out the lead. After another run by the Buccaneers, they took the final set 25-13.

The Blue Angels finished every set on the evening with a non-negative hitting percentage. The most effective set of the night for MMU was the second when the team finished with 11 kills on 43 total attacks.

Lauren Harris led the offensive charge for the Blue Angels. The senior finished with nine kills on 29 total attacks. Teammate Alessa Nelson (Jr./Rockford, Ill.) led the squad with 15 assists on the day.

Cleaning up the hard hits, Adrianna Nester (Jr./Anaheim, Calif.) led the team with 17 digs and one service ace.

After tonight, the Blue Angels will return to the court Mon. Sept. 24 at 7:00 pm when they head to Manitowoc, Wis. to take on Silver Lake College. For updates and box scores for the Blue Angels, check out MtMaryAthletics.com.
