Volleyball: Day 2 Recap of Forester Invite

LAKE FOREST, IL – The Mount Mary Volleyball team faced their 3rd and 4th straight opponents from Illinois as they competed for a second consecutive day at the Forester Invite at Lake Forest College. The Illinois squads proved to be too tough as the Blue Angels dropped matches to Lake Forest College and Dominican University on the day.

In match one of the day, the host team, Lake Forest College, started strong in the morning match and never looked back.  The Foresters took three straight sets by scores of 25-8. 25-13 and 25-15.  Brianna Ecker once again paced Mount Mary with kills, she recorded 10 for the match.

Coming off the early morning defeat, the Blue Angels took on Dominican University in what proved to be a very competitive match.  After dropping set one, Mount Mary nearly evened the match in set two, falling by the closest of margins, 26-24.  Then in set three the Blue Angels claimed a 25-15 win to keep the match alive.

Set four once again went down to the wire, the Blue Angels nearly forced the decisive fifth set, but the Stars again pulled out a two point win at 28-26 to win the set and the match.

Ecker once again was the leader in kills for MMU with 9, Kaitlyn Powers recorded 8 kills and Emma White 6.  Ahlyna Cason provided 18 digs for the Mount Mary defense.

Mount Mary (1-3) will now have 5 days to catch their breath prior to their next match.  The MMU volleyball squad will open their home season in the annual Blue Angel Bash.  The multi team event will be held at Mount Mary, September 9th and 10th.  During the two day event, the Blue Angels will have matches against Alverno College, Finlandia University, Anderson University and Lawrence University.
