Volleyball at Lawrence Invite:  Day 1 Recap

APPLETON, WI - The Mount Mary volleyball team competed in the Lawrence University Invite on Friday. The Blue Angels were unable to break into the win column on the day. MMU dropped two close matches, to Rockford University and Maranatha Baptist University.

The early match of the day saw the Blue Angels take on the Regents of Rockford University.  The 11 am start did not benefit MMU as they dropped set one by a score of 25-15.  The Blue Angels came back to take set two by a score of 25-22 and even the match.  Rockford won the go ahead third set 25-17, and the fourth set 25-21, to end the match.

Statistically, Mount Mary was paced by Brianna Ecker with 11 kills and Kaitlyn Powers with 9.  Defensively Ahlyna Cason recorded 18 digs and Emma White 11. 

The days second match against Maranatha Baptist University began with promise for MMU as the Blue Angels took set one by a score of 25-19.

The Sabercats of Maranatha took the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-18.   With their backs against the wall, Mount Mary showed great fight and took a thrilling fourth set to keep the match alive. The Blue Angels won set four by a score of 30-28 to send the match to a decisive fifth set.

A complete comeback was not to be for the Blue Angels however.  Maranatha took the decisive fifth set by a score of 15-9.

Powers and Ecker again set the pace with kills, as each player recorded 22 against Maranatha.  Brianna Ecker was also the dig team leader with 22 during the tilt against the Sabercats.

Mount Mary (4-6) will remain in Appleton and compete again tomorrow at Lawrence.  At 12 pm, Mount Mary will take on Northland College, and at 6 pm, the Blue Angels will take on the host Lawrence Vikings.  Mount Mary swept Lawrence in three sets on Saturday, September 10th.
