APPLETON, WI – Day 2 of the Lawrence Invite saw the Mount Mary Volleyball team split two matches. The day's first match saw MMU drop a heartbreaking five set match to Northland College. The Blue Angels rebounded however, and for a second straight Saturday, knocked off the Vikings of Lawrence University.
The days first match against the LumberJills of Northland College, could not have started much better for the Blue Angel Volleyball team. MMU took sets one and two by scores of 25-20 and 25-22.
Northland kept the match alive by taking set three by a score of 25-16. Set four would be an exciting back and forth affair. Northland fought off a match point and took the set 26-24. Northland took that momentum and won the decisive fifth set by a 15-11 score.
It was the second straight five set loss for the Blue Angels, after Friday's loss to Maranatha Baptist went the distance as well. In the match against Northland, Emma White tallied 35 assists, leading to 19 kills by Brianna Ecker and 15 by Kaitlyn Powers. As has been the standard throughout the season, Ahlyna Cason paced the Blue Angels in digs with 21.
In the evening match, Mount Mary and Lawrence played the concluding match of a tournament for a second straight Saturday. Just like they did in Milwaukee last week, the Blue Angels dispatched Lawrence, this time in four sets.
The only set win for Lawrence came in set number two, otherwise the match was largely controlled by the Blue Angels. Final scores were 25-21, 23-25, 25-9, and 25-21
Statistically, Ecker (17) and Powers (10) once again provided kills at the net white Emma White totaled 31 assists in the win over Lawrence.
Mount Mary (5-7) will return home for a single match Tuesday evening, September 20th. The Blue Angels will host Beloit College at the Bloechl Center. The match is scheduled for a 7 pm start, and all live coverage can be found on www.mtmaryathletics.com
