Volleyball Season Recap & Conference Tournament Preview: Day 1

Volleyball Season Recap & Conference Tournament Preview: Day 1

Over the next three days, we will look back at the 2022 Mount Mary Volleyball season as they head to the University of Mary Washington for the Coast 2 Coast Conference Tournament.  The 2022 Blue Angel team has won more matches than any MMU squad since 2012.

The Blue Angels opened the season on September 1st at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.  Featuring the debut of many young players, the Blue Angels played a first close set, which they pulled out, and then easily knocked off the Archers in 3 straight sets.  Brianna Ecker had 8 kills and in her Mount Mary debut, Caitlyn Krell put up 17 assists.  The season opening win gave MMU the first 1-0 start since the 2012 season.

The following weekend saw Mount Mary host the Blue Angel Bash at the Bloechl Center.  Mount Mary won 3 of 4 matches on the weekend, defeating Alverno, Finlandia and Lawrence.  MMU first year hitter Kaitlyn Powers really began to make her presence felt, as she had 40 kills in the four matches.

Mount Mary followed up with another weekend tournament at Lawrence University in Appleton, that event included two tough five set losses to Northland and Maranatha Baptist, but the Blue Angels knocked off the host Vikings in the final match of the tournament.

Brianna Ecker and Kaitlyn Powers were named to the all-tournament team at Lawrence, the first of multiple such honors that would come through the season for both players.

Tomorrow we will look at middle third of the Volleyball season, that saw more young Blue Angel players emerge as key contributors.

Mount Mary will open the C2C tournament on Friday, November 4th against Salisbury.  The Gulls are 18-7 on the season.   Stay tuned to www.mtmaryathletics.com for all coverage of MMU volleyball heading to the conference tournament.
