Today we continue the recap of the 2022 Mount Mary Volleyball season. The team heads to the Coast 2 Coast conference tournament this Friday and Saturday, with an automatic birth to the NCAA tournament on the line.
Following a series of wins in September's Blue Angel Bash and tournament at Lawrence University, the Blue Angels had a series of tough matches and then a huge match at home. Said match was against local rival and fellow women's institution, Alverno College.
The September 28th match against Alverno was Hawaiian theme night for the fans, but the match was anything but a vacation for the Inferno. The Blue Angels were the dominant team and swept away Alverno in straight sets, it was the second win for MMU over Alverno on the season.
Kailtyn Powers continued her ascent in her first season, leading Mount Mary with 12 kills on the match. Perhaps Mount Mary's most reliable player, Brianna Ecker also tallied 9 kills in the match.
Lillian Thundercloud, another first year player, began to emerge as well as she contributed 7 kills as her role increased. MMU has had the luxury all season of having two very skilled and effective setters in Emma White and Caitlyn Krell. In this match White had 17 assists and Krell 13.
Two stalwarts defensively for MMU all season have been Ahlyna Cason and Ava Ramos, the two players combined for 29 digs in the home win over Alverno.
MMU continued the momentum into wins in two of their next three matches. The Angels swept Lawrence at Lawrence and then tamed the Finlandia Lions on October 8th. The win over Finlandia clinched that Mount Mary would have the most wins and best season since the 2012 campaign. A great accomplishment for a team primarily consisting of new players and first year players.
