Muskies To Battle Angels

Muskies To Battle Angels

It is time for the Mount Mary University softball home opener. To begin a six game home stand, the Blue Angels (2-12) will first host the Lakeland College Muskies (5-9) at the Rock Complex in Franklin, Wis. March 23rd with the first pitch at 3:00 pm.

It has been a season of progress for the Blue Angels. As their spring trip provided a look into what could be for the young team, a tough stretch of regional games continues, but this time MMU has the home field advantage.

Across the board, the Blue Angels are improving. From more timely and consistent hitting, to solid and reliable pitching, the talent level continues to increase for the team.

Right out of the gate, rookie Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas) has been a force to be reckoned with. Tied for first on the Blue Angels with 14 hits, Contreras leads the team in extra base hits, doubles, slugging percentage, and in her 35 innings pitched has struck out 21 batters.

Veteran Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) has picked up right where she left off last season, leading the team with a .359 average, .405 OBP, eight RBIs and 14 hits. The senior's presence behind the plate has also guided her team from a 14.97 ERA in 2014 to a 8.09 ERA this year.

The Muskies are on a three game losing streak, but have kept their bats active in that streak averaging eight hits a game with three runs. Lakeland is a solid hitting offense and the Muskies are fueled by Sami Jo Williams. Williams is hitting .405, with 17 hits, two doubles, two homeruns, 14 RBIs and .643 slugging percentage.

After the Muskies come to town, the Blue Angels will host neighboring Wisconsin Lutheran College Thursday March 26th with the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm. The games will be held in Franklin, Wis. at the Rock Complex.
