Blue Angels Pick Up Season's First Sweep

Blue Angels Pick Up Season's First Sweep

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University softball team swept the Maranatha Baptist University Sabercats (1-14) Saturday at Alverno Field. The Blue Angels (5-17) snap a two game losing streak after the wins today, and it marks the first time this season the Blue Angels won both games in a doubleheader.

The bats came alive today at Alverno Field. In the first game, MMU blasted 10 hits to bring home 11 runs. It was a huge third inning that may have clinched the game for the Blue Angels. Down 3-2 against the Sabercats, MMU led off the inning with Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) launching a 201 foot shot over the centerfield fence for the first baseman's second homer of the year.

With the game tied 3-3, Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas) stepped into the batter's box to promptly relocate the ball over the fence for the first back to back homeruns of the year. But the inning was far from over, directly after that, Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) hit her second season homerun making it the first time in the NCAA era that the Blue Angels hit homers in three consecutive at-bats.

The Blue Angels tacked on two more runs in the third, and then had another big inning in the fourth. MMU brought home four runs in the bottom half, all getting started off of a perfectly placed single by Shandrieka Richardson (Jr./Atlanta, Ga.). The Blue Angels held onto the lead and finished ahead 11-3 in five innings. Nikki Festge (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) got her second win of the year and the complete game.

Game two saw even more offense from the Blue Angels. Only eight hits in the second game, but the timely hitting coincided with patience at the plate as MMU walked 9 times. Katie Edwards continued to crush the ball on Senior Day with her team leading 26th hit of the season and RBIs number 17 and 18.

Ashley Contreras did her job on both ends in game two, going 2-2 at the plate with two walks and her team leading eighth double of the year. In the circle, Contreras picked up her third win of the season, and her sixth complete game.

After some solid hitting and good pitching, the Blue Angels finished 12-4 over the Sabercats in five innings.

The Blue Angels will go up against Lakeland College Sunday April 12th at Alverno Field. The first pitch of game one will be at 1:00 pm.
