Muskies Bats Too Hot For Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE -- Mount Mary University (5-19) lost both games of their doubleheader today at Alverno Field. The visiting Lakeland College Muskies (10-18) won game one 20-4 then came away with their second victory of the day with a score of 9-1.

In game one, the Muskies came out hot as they grabbed two runs in their first four batters. Nikki Festge (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) bounced back quickly however, coming back with a strong strikeout and groundout to end the inning. The bottom half of the inning saw the Blue Angels battle right back as Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) smacked her third homerun of the season with one on to tie the game at 2-2.

Starting in the second inning, the Blue Angels defensive miscues took over, as the innings two errors led to six unearned runs by the Muskies. The top of the third saw Lakeland tack on three more unearned runs.

The Blue Angels tried to fight back, but the seven errors throughout the game compounded quickly. Of the 20 runs scored by LC in game one, only seven were earned. Festge was credited with the loss, and her seventh complete game of the year.

Game two saw some stellar defensive grabs by the Blue Angels, but again, saw some costly errors. A total of five errors in the second game for MMU led to four unearned runs.

On the offensive side, Katie Edwards continued her clutch hitting as she hit a two out homerun in the bottom of the sixth. The homer gave the Blue Angels four more outs to work with, effectively giving her team new life, but the Blue Angels could not add any more in the seventh.

The loss gives Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas) a record of 3-9 and marks the rookie's seventh complete game of the season.

After Sunday's games, the Blue Angels will head to the Milwaukee School of Engineering to take on the Raiders. That doubleheader is on Thursday April 16th with first pitch at 3:30 pm.
