Late Season Split With Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Mount Mary University softball team split games today against host Rockford University. The Regents took game one 5-1 then MMU won the second game 10-2. After today's series, the Regents are 2-26 on the season while MMU is now 5-14.

Both teams recorded five hits in game one, but the Regents were able to score five runs to take the win. Of those five runs, only two runs were earned as the Blue Angels two errors may have meant the difference in the game.

A subsequent wild pitch moved the runner into scoring position, then a single gave Rockford the lead which they would not surrender.

After giving up two unearned runs in the bottom of inning two, the Blue Angels got their bats going in the top of the fourth when Nikki Festge (Sr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) sent Contreras home on a single to center field.

Contreras led the offense in the first game going 2-of-3 from the plate with a double and a run scored. Teammate Katy Groth (Fr./Racine, Wis.) went 1-of-2 in the batter's box with a double.

Game two saw the Blue Angels bats return to form. MMU scored 10 runs of off 12 hits with one extra base hit.

The first two runs of game two came off two straight hits by Peyton Davis (Fr./Tracy, Calif.) then Payton Hintz (So./Almond, Wis.). The Blue Angels would not surrender the lead the rest of the game, adding six in the top of the seventh inning for MMU's highest run total in a single inning this year.

Freshman Taylor Yordt (Omaha, Neb.) went 3-of-4 from the dish to lead the team in hits. Fellow Blue Angel Payton Hintz led the game with two RBIs.

Festge went 7.0 innings giving up two runs, zero earned runs, all while striking out eight in game two.
