Blue Angels fall in pair against Illinois Opponents

Elmhurst,IL- In a season full of cancellations and schedule adjustments due to weather, the Mount Mary softball team used significant creativity to play a doubleheader on Sunday.

The Blue Angels took on two opponents from Chicagoland in two single road contests, The Maroons of the University of Chicago and the Blue Jays of Elmhurst University, each at their home sites.  Unfortunately, Mount Mary could not deliver the big hit in either game and fell to the Maroons and Blue Jays in close contests.

The two games followed similar patterns, with Mount Mary getting strong pitching, putting runners in scoring position, but being unable in most cases to drive in the key run.  In the first contest at the University of Chicago, Mount Mary left 5 runners on base, while tallying only two hits.  Brianna Lupa kept the Maroons at bay for the majority of the game, allowing only 2 earned runs.  But Chicago would need no more offense as they held on for a 5-0 win.

In the day's 2nd contest at Elmhurst, The Blue Angels left 8 on base and had four base hits.  MMU pushed only one run across the plate, and Elmhurst was victorious by a 6-1 final.  Lupa was the only Blue Angel with multiple hits on the day, and Marissa Heraly drove in the single run in game 2.

Head Coach Perry Clark commented on the day, "Poor hitting and defense make it hard to win.  Unfortunately that is what cost us Sunday.  Our pitching was good enough to win, but we lacked the other components to be successful today."

Mount Mary (13-17) will head to Alverno on Wednesday, May 4th, hoping to set a new modern era record for single season wins in the NCAA era, which dates back to 2010.
