Blue Angels grab split at Beloit

Blue Angels grab split at Beloit

Beloit, WI- The Mount Mary softball team hit the road for Beloit College on Friday.  A red-hot start in game one propelled the Blue Angels to a 9-7 win.  The Buccaneers would take game two by a 9-6 score to force the split result in the doubleheader.

Mount Mary posted six runs in the first two innings of game one, highlighted by Mary DeFore cracking a three-run double and Alexandria Eads a two run single.

Leading 9-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th, things seemed secure for MMU.  However, Beloit staged a rally which the Blue Angels would need to extinguish.  Mary DeFore went six and one third innings in the circle, but MMU would call on Aariana Kraut to save the game.  Kraut recorded the game's final two outs including a strikeout of Stella Lutes with the bases loaded and the outcome of the game very much in question.  Kraut's save secured the 9-7 win for the Blue Angels.

In addition to grabbing the pitching victory, Mary DeFore had two hits and three runs batted in.  Katelyn McCallum and Micaela Gonzalez also had two hits for Mount Mary in game one.

Game two would start off nearly as well for the Blue Angels, taking a 4-0 lead, powered by offense from Brianna Mendez, Brianna Ecker, DeFore and Jodie Penman.  The Beloit team would storm back however and score the game's next 8 runs.

MMU would pull to within two runs at 8-6 but would get no closer as Beloit took game two by a 9-6 final.  Brianna Mendez was the offensive standout for Mount Mary in game two, going 4-4 with two runs batted in.  DeFore and Alexandria Eads both stayed hot as well, with three hits each in game two.

The Blue Angels (2-17) will next be in action on Thursday, April 11th, playing their first home doubleheader of the season in Glendale, Wisconsin.  The games will be played at the Knights softball stadium at Maslowski Park (2200 W Bender Rd. Glendale, WI 53209).

Their opponents will be the Sabercats of Maranatha Baptist University, the doubleheader will be the first two of six scheduled contests between the two teams in the month of April.  All coverage of Mount Mary softball can be found here on www.mtmaryathletics.com
