Cagers Clipped at NCU Classic

MINNEAPOLIS – The Mount Mary University basketball team dropped a pair of contests at the North Central University Classic this weekend, falling to Waldorf University 99-38 Friday before falling to the host Rams of NCU Saturday, 104-49.

Waldorf 99, MMU 38

Fourteen different Warriors scored for the NAIA-affiliate from Iowa, combining for 52 percent from the floor on 38-for-73 shooting as a team to cruise in both team's tournament opener.

MMU sophomore Talesa Campbell (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Boyd Anderson) led the Blue Angels with 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Sophomore Brianna Duke (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) and freshman Natalie McDermott (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) each added seven points, with Duke and freshman Lisette Rodriguez (Bensenville, Ill./Fenton) securing a team-high five rebounds.

Waldorf (2-4 overall) turned a 6-4 lead at the six-minute mark of the opening frame into a 20-9 advantage by the end of the quarter. The Blue Angels would trail 41-18 at the half.

North Central (Minn.) 104, MMU 49

Another big first quarter—this time by the tournament hosts—decided the game early as Mount Mary struggled to find its offensive stride in Saturday's classic finale. NCU surged to a 25-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and poured in 31 points in the fourth quarter alone to double-up the Blue Angels.

Duke eclipsed the 20-point mark in Saturday's matchup with a game-high 21, also recording a team-best five rebounds and three steals. Senior Brianna Jashinsky (Butler, Wis./Hamilton) added 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting from downtown, while Campbell added 10 points and four assists. Campbell, Rodriguez, and junior Sarah Shaffer (Webster, Wis./Siren) chipped in four rebounds apiece.

Recently activated sophomore Ashton Longazel (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and freshman Jhania Linder (Memphis, Tenn./Southwind) saw their first action in a MMU uniform over the weekend, each recording two rebounds Friday and one on Saturday.
