Sabres' Hot Second Half Bites Blue Angels

Sabres' Hot Second Half Bites Blue Angels

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Blue Angel basketball team battled to its first halftime lead of the 2021-22 campaign Thursday evening, but hot second-half shooting from host Marian University (Wis.) handed the Mount Mary University basketball team its fifth straight loss, 66-49, at MU's Sadoff Gym.

The victory was Marian's first of the year, as the Sabres improved to 1-2 overall, while Mount Mary dropped to 0-5.

Sophomore Talesa Campbell (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Boyd Anderson) led Mount Mary with 13 points and 11 rebounds, her first double-double as a Blue Angel. Junior Sarah Shaffer (Webster, Wis./Siren) nearly added a double-double of her own with 10 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Brianna Duke (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) added 11 points, six boards, and a team-high four assists on the night.

Senior Brianna Jashinsky (Butler, Wis./Hamilton) hit the only two three-pointers for MMU, chipping in eight points and a pair of steals. Freshman Lisette Rodriguez (Bensenville, Ill./Fenton) scored a bucket with seven rebounds, and sophomore Ashton Longazel (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) posted a career-best five points on perfect 2-for-2 shooting from the floor and hitting her only free throw.

Mount Mary used its size advantage in the first half, outshooting the Sabres 40.6 percent (13-for-32) to 27.8 percent (10-for-36) from the floor. MMU held Marian to just 5-for-22 shooting from deep in the first half, helping it overcome a two-point deficit at the quarter to take a 29-27 lead into the locker room.

That all changed in the second half, as four of Marian's seven made shots in the third quarter were from deep. A Campbell free throw cut the third-quarter deficit to 45-38, but the Sabres poured it on in the fourth, outscoring MMU 21-11 in the final stanza.

Marian was led by Paris Harris' 27 points off seven-for-16 shooting from three. She also recorded a team-best 11 rebounds.
