Basketball Bounced by Crown in Saturday Matinee

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University basketball team played its sixth game in 10 days Saturday afternoon at the Bloechl Center, falling to Crown College (Minn.), 79-39.

The Blue Angels fell to 0-6 on the year, while Crown improved to 3-1.

Crown took control early in the first quarter, surging to an 11-0 run, eventually holding an 18-6 advantage at the first intermission. The Storm led by as many as 22 in the second quarter, before a layup by freshman Lisette Rodriguez (Bensenville, Ill./Fenton) stopped the run as MMU trailed 32-12 at the half.

Mount Mary put forth a spirited comeback effort in the third, using a 13-4 scoring advantage to pull to within 11, 36-25. Crown promptly responded, however, with a 19-0 run spanning the third quarter break to put the game away.

The Blue Angels were once again led by sophomore Talesa Campbell (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Boyd Anderson), whose big second half led to 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Sophomore Brianna Duke (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double as a Blue Angel.

Sophomore Ashton Longazel (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) recorded a career-best eight rebounds—including three offensive boards—and senior Brianna Jashinsky (Butler, Wis./Hamilton) added six points. Junior Sarah Shaffer (Webster, Wis./Siren) and Rodriguez each added four points.

Crown turned 27 Blue Angel turnovers into 35 points, and outshot MMU 42.3 percent (33-for-78) to 28.6 percent (16-for-56) from the floor. The Storm also outrebounded Mount Mary 50-33, securing 18 offensive rebounds for 16 second-chance points.
