Rough Third Quarter costs Mount Mary lead and game at Northland

Ashland,WI- For two and a half quarters it looked as though the Mount Mary basketball team would claim their third straight win Monday afternoon at Northland College. However the Blue Angels went ice cold in the third quarter and Northland capitalized, erasing an eight point Blue Angel lead and taking the contest by a final of 75-54.

The Blue Angels opened the game at Northland with perhaps their finest half of the season.  Forcing the senior laden Lumberjills to use a timeout trailing MMU by a score of 10-2.  MMU kept the momentum into the second quarter and took a 37-29 lead into the halftime break.

Unfortunately, things for the Blue Angel offense dried up at that point.  The combination of increased Northland physical pressure defense and cold shooting by the Angels kept MMU without a field goal in the third quarter.  The offense for the young MMU cagers picked up slightly in the fourth but Northland continued to apply pressure on both ends of the floor, which in the end was more than Mount Mary could withstand.  Late free throws by Northland made the final margin 75-54.

Current Coast 2 Coast conference player of the week Skye Giddings was the leading scorer for the Blue Angels with 16 points, Giddings also grabbed six rebounds.  Deja Rivers scored 14 points and snared 12 rebounds for a double double.  The other Blue Angel in double digits was a third first year player, Alexus Hatcher, who scored 11 points and collected four rebounds.

The Blue Angels (3-8) will have one more road game and one more home game prior to Christmas.  Friday, December 16th, Mount Mary will head to Rockford University.  The Blue Angels and Regents will tip at 6 pm and all coverage will be available on www.mtmaryathletics.com
