Blue Angel Basketball Establishes New Single Season Wins Record

Watertown, WI- The Mount Mary Blue Angel basketball team headed to Maranatha Baptist on Thursday evening for their last regular season road game of the 23-24 campaign.  The Blue Angels had lost four straight at MBU, with the last victory for MMU occuring on November 30th, 2017.  Mount Mary was up to the challenge on Thursday.  Their decisvie 82-53 victory was their 11th of the season, giving the 2023-2024 team the most victories in a single season in program history.  

The Sabercats came out hot and took a 9-4 lead early in the contest, but MMU would rally back and lead 22-17 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The Blue Angels would control the play from there, taking a 17 point lead into the halftime break and cruising to the 29 point win.  

Three players scored in double digits on the night for MMU, paced by Deja Rivers who played her finest game of the season.  Rivers scored 20 points on 8-13 shooting from the floor.  Brianna Mendez also had an outstanding evening, Mendez recorded a double double with 17 points and a team leading 14 rebounds.  Na'Zyia Bobo nearly joined her with a double double, Bobo dropped in 16 points and had a season high 8 rebounds.  Mount Mary shot a perfect 14-14 from the foul line while the Sabercats only recorded 7 free throw attempts on the night.  India Lucas played a remarkable all around game as well, with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals.  Lucas was also charged with shutting down MBU standout Katelyn Brown throughout the entire game.  

The Blue Angels (11-11) will play one final regular season game before heading to Newport News, Virginia for the Coast 2 Coast conference tournament.  MMU will host Great Lakes Christian College at the Bloechl Center, Saturday, February 17th at 1 pm.  With a win, Mount Mary would complete the first winning regular season in the history of Blue Angel Basketball.  The game will also be the program's annual Play 4 Kay game.  Honoring legendary NC State coach, Kay Yow, and raising money for research for all women's cancer prevention.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink and all coverage of Blue Angel Basketball can be found here on www.mtmaryathletics.com
