Record Setting Season Ends in C2C Tournament

Newport News, VA- The Mount Mary basketball team hoped to add a postseason victory to their list of accomplishments during the 23-24 campaign when they tipped off of Thursday evening in the Coast to Coast conference tournament.  The Seagulls of Salisbury University utilized their superior size and hot shooting to prevent MMU from grabbing the win however, as Salisbury defeated Mount Mary by the final score of 81-50.

Despite a few runs of solid play, Mount Mary could not hang with Salisbury offensively.  The Seagulls shot 48% from the floor and their front line made things tough around the rim for the Mount Mary offense.  Salisbury blocked four Blue Angel shots, altered many others and held MMU to just 13-37 on two point shots in the contest.

For a second straight game, MMU played nine players and each had at least one point and one rebound.  After being named C2C rookie of the year just days earlier, Brianna Mendez paced Mount Mary in scoring.  She dropped in 12 points and added 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals.  Na'Zyia Bobo scored 9, Deja Rivers 8 and Alyssen Noriega 7.  Joselyn Gonzales led Mount Mary with 7 rebounds, and she added four blocks, 3 assists and 2 steals.

The Blue Angels wrap up the season at 12-12.  The accomplishments of the 2023-2024 team include:

-  the most wins in program history

-  highest winning percentage in program history

-  most home wins and road wins in program history

-  19 wins in two seasons makes the two season period of 22-23 and 23-24 the most wins in a two season period for the program

The Blue Angel team featured no seniors and only two players older than a sophomore.  With the potential to return 100% of their team, the future appears to be very bright for the Mount Mary Basketball program.  All coverage of Mount Mary athletics can be found here on www.mtmaryathletics.com
