Milwaukee, WI- In Saturday's basketball contest between the Mount Mary Blue Angels and Beloit College, quarters two through four played out largely evenly. Unfortunately for MMU, an inability to find the range in the first quarter proved to be the difference in Saturday's 64-48 loss to Beloit.
In quarter number one, MMU could not knock down a field goal in 13 attempts including seven three point attempts. Remarkably due to their resilient defense, MMU trailed only 13-3 at the end of the rough quarter.
The Blue Angels would rally back to trail by only three at half, 27-24, in the second half MMU just could not quite get over the hump to complete the comeback.
MMU trailed only by six heading into the fourth quarter but Beloit would maintain the lead for the sixteen point win.
Vanessa Diaz was the leading scorer for the Blue Angels with 16 points, she nearly tabbed a double double as she grabbed nine rebounds and also four assists and three steals.
Alexus Hatcher scored nine and snared five rebounds, while Sanai Ballard contributed eight points, six steals, two assists and two rebounds.
India Lucas provided her usual all around floor game, with four points, six rebounds and four assists.
Both teams struggled from behind the three point line and the free throw line, the difference in the game proved to be field goal shooting within the three point arc, with Beloit going 20-36 (56%) and the Blue Angels just 9-33 (27%).
MMU (5-8) will next be in action on January 2nd, the Blue Angels will head to Northland College for a game with a 2 pm tip. Stay tuned to www.mtmaryathletics.com for all coverage of Blue Angel Basketball.
