Cougars thump Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary has seen its fair share of tough games this young soccer season and that streak continued Wednesday as Concordia-Chicago held the Blue Angels not only scoreless, but shotless in a 7-0 win at MMU Soccer Field.

Possessing the ball for nearly the entire game, the Cougars opened the game with three goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. They would add four in the second half, including two in the closing minutes to cap off a dominant road victory for the 4-0-1 leaders of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference leaders.

Goalkeeper Ashley Leverenz (SR, Mauston, Wis.) was busy in-net for the Blue Angels, as MMU's defense has been bitten with the injury bug. Without the sweeping services of Nicole Ordway (SR/Republic, Wash.) and Nina Her (JR/Brown Deer, Wis.) who went down with a leg injury in the first half, Mount Mary was on the defensive for much of the game. When the final whistle blew, Leverenz tallied 13 saves on 20 shots-on-goal—many of which coming under a barrage of Cougar attackers.

CUC tallied 40 shots on the night while Mount Mary failed to put a ball near the Cougars' goal.

The Blue Angels will have little time to regroup as they head to western Michigan for a weekend road trip. MMU will play a pair of greater Grand Rapids, Mich., area schools in Andrews University Friday afternoon before taking on Grace Bible College Saturday. Both teams will promise a formidable matchup as all of last year's contests against the Cardinals and Tigers proved physical and down-to-the-wire.

Stay tuned in to MMU's social media outlets (Facebook and Twitter) for the most up-to-date information on the Blue Angels' tour!
