Blue Angels Fall in Home Opener

Blue Angels Fall in Home Opener

MILWAUKEE – In the Mount Mary University soccer home opener, the Blue Angels were defeated by visiting Crown College 5-0 at Mount Mary Field.

A tough match for the season opener, as the constant assault from the Storm offense put the Blue Angels behind early. Two minutes into the game, Crown got their first goal, and would not surrender the lead after that point.

The Blue Angels defense, although giving up three goals in the first half, tightened up their pressure in the second half only allowing a pair of goals. The loss on paper may look lopsided, but the Blue Angels looked a lot sharper and more cohesive as a team than prior seasons.

That organization paid off to an extent. In the past, MMU had trouble generating many offensive opportunities against high octane offense from the opposition. Today, the Blue Angels still found a way to control the ball and that led to 14 shots on goal, seven a piece for Karina Salgado (Fr./Chicago, Ill.) and Ashley Pfeifer (Fr./Elkhart Lake, Wis.).

Last year's Association of Division III Independents Goalkeeper of the Year Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) got her work in as she denied 15 of the 21 shots on goal.

A tough season opener for the Blue Angels, but that wound will not last as MMU will turn around and host Eureka College Sept 6 at Mount Mary Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
