Blue Angels Soar Past Eagles

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team notched their first victory today at Mount Mary Field. The Blue Angels defeated visiting Robert Morris-Lake County (0-2) with a final score of 12-2. The win gives the Blue Angels a 1-13 record for the season.

On a windy and chilly day, the Blue Angels took control of the contest early on. It took the rookie Karina Salgado (Fr./Chicago, Ill.) three minutes before she blasted her first goal of the game. 16 minutes later, Salgado setup teammate Ashley Pfeifer (Fr./Elkhart Lake, Wis.) for the next goal making it 2-0 Blue Angels.

The Blue Angels took a 7-0 lead into halftime, and Salgado was responsible for three goals herself, with three assists.

After firing 22 shots in the first half, the Blue Angels took their foot off the gas pedal and decided to work for quality shots.

Once the Blue Angels made it 10-0, Jasmin Monejano scored two straight goals giving the Eagles a short boost. The Blue Angels "fresh out of goal" Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) added two more long goals to finalize the score 12-2.

"I was a little disappointed with our start. I think part of it is when you against a team with few numbers you act a little lackadaisical." Head Coach Jon Gulrajani went on, "Once we settled down, I think we started to control the game."

With only 24 shots on goal, an accurate 12 slipped past the goalkeeper. Among the amazing team accuracy, Salgado recorded her first collegiate hat trick, and also added four assists.

Coach Gulrajani added, "Overall I am pleased with the full team effort. Everybody contributed in today's game, and I was really happy to see us connecting and finishing quality chances today in front of the goal. I give credit to Robert Morris, they fought hard all game. They got two goals back in the second half, and they never quit."

Following today's win, the Blue Angels will prepare to host Finlandia Mon. Oct. 19 at Mount Mary Field. Live stats will be available for the 2:00 pm kickoff.
