Regents Ride Early Lead

Regents Ride Early Lead

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Mount Mary University soccer team lost to host Rockford 9-0 today. The loss for the Blue Angels gives them a 2-14 record on the year and moves the Regents to 3-13.

Down to just nine players to start the contest, the Blue Angels were outmanned from the opening kickoff and struggled to even out the lack of bodies on the field. The Regents responded by taking the lead early in this one. Only 23 seconds into the game, Giovana Ortega setup Mackenzi Hesselbart for the contest's first goal making it 1-0 Rockford. The Regents never surrendered the lead after that point.

Ortega went into the locker room with a hat trick, and her team would enjoy a 6-0 lead as the horn sounded.

After an injury brought the Blue Angels down to just eight on the field, the Regents sportingly removed a player as well. With a more even body count in the second half, the Blue Angels held the Regents to just 11 shots in the frame and three goals.

Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) was pegged with the loss in goal and finished with 15 saves on the day.

Karina Salgado (Fr./Chicago, Ill.) led the offensive strike with all three of MMU's shots, two of which were on goal.

"It was a tough day, we went from a season high Monday to a season low tonight." Head Coach Jon Gulrajani was still optimistic with his team, "I credit the players that made the trip they put in a solid effort under the circumstances. It's hard to play this short and keep good organization. Rockford did a nice job finishing and they put us under a lot of pressure. "

After today's match, the Blue Angels will prepare for their two game road trip to Minnesota. First up on their trip north is a game against North Central (7-8-1). That contest is scheduled for Fri. Oct. 23 beginning at 3:30 pm.
