GSAC Soccer Tourney Preview: Mount Mary vs. Salem

GSAC Soccer Tourney Preview: Mount Mary vs. Salem

Game Time: Friday Nov. 6, 2015 12:00 pm EST
Place: Agnes Scott Campus

For the first time in their NCAA era, the Blue Angels soccer team is heading to a post season conference tournament. A very important moment for the Blue Angels, as the winner of the Great South Athletic Conference tournament will be given an invitation to the NCAA DIII national soccer tournament.

The Blue Angels will not have an easy path to the championship. Placed seventh in the tournament, MMU will have to face Salem College, the winners of last year's GSAC soccer tournament. The Spirits finished the regular season at 13-2 (4-0 GSAC) and also have the top three goal scorers in the conference.

With three more Spirits in the top four of assists in the GSAC, Salem has worked as a well-oiled offense all year long.

On the defensive side, Salem has two very effective goalkeepers in Paige Ketchum and Kimberlee Templeton who have some of the top save percentages in the GSAC with .840 and .800 respectively.

For the Blue Angels, leading the way on offense are the two newcomers Ashley Pfeifer (Fr./Elkhart Lake, Wis.) and Karina Salgado (Fr./Chicago, Ill.). Pfeifer is fourth in the GSAC in goals scored with 10, and Salgado leads the assist column in the conference with nine.

Defensively, MMU is led by Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) who is second in the entire NCAA DIII in saves with 230. Onan's save percentage is at .762 on the year, good enough for sixth in the GSAC.

Heading into the first ever MMU soccer NCAA post season conference tournament, the Blue Angels have their sights set high. The Salem Spirits won the GSAC tournament a year ago, and have gone undefeated in the GSAC since last season. Follow live stats for today's historic match at mtmaryathletics.com.
