Inferno Break Tie Late

Inferno Break Tie Late

MILWAUKEE – Today at Alverno Soccer Field the visiting Mount Mary University Blue Angels lost to the Inferno 2-1. The Blue Angels are now 1-8 on the year while Alverno moves up to 4-7 on the 2018 campaign.

As was the case in the game on Saturday for the Blue Angels, the opposition attacked with a first minute goal today. This time, Shaye Wolfe quickly slipped into the heart of the Blue Angel defense as teammate Angela Chobanian placed the ball into Wolfe's path. Wolfe used the positioning to groove a kick past the goal keeper for a quick 1-0 score at the 1:46 mark.

The defense for the Blue Angels quickly tightened up deterring attempt after attempt from the opposition. With the opponent's offense temporarily at bay, the Blue Angels continued to attack Alverno's goal. After Pang Kuo Xiong (Sr./Milwaukee, Wis.) kicked a shot that deflected off the post, Lucy Pavelko (Jr./Muskego, Wis.) corralled the rebound and chipped a shot into the goal to tie the game.

After the two teams trade possession for the remaining 15 minutes of the half, they headed into halftime with a score of 1-1. Although tied on the scoreboard, the Inferno outshot MMU 12-to-4 in the first half.

The Blue Angels opened the second half off with senior Karina Salgado (Chicago, Ill.) riffling a shot from 35 yards out that came up empty. Then the Inferno attacked with four shots of their own over the next ten minutes. At the 57-minute mark, Alverno's Shayne Wolfe took advantage of a penalty kick stemming from a foul in the box by the Blue Angels. Wolfe riffled a kick into the top corner of the goal to break the tie.

MMU continued to pressure the Alverno defense, but were turned away on all four of their shots in the second half. Of the 23 shots taken by the Inferno in the second half, 13 were on goal. Hannah Rose (Jr./Jeromesville, Ohio) was able to save 12 of those second half shots; Rose leads the American Collegiate Athletic Association with 117.

After this afternoon's contest, the Blue Angels will return to the pitch Fri. Oct. 5 when they head to Watertown, Wis. to take on Maranatha Baptist University. The teams will start play at 4:00 pm. Live stats for the contest can be found at MtMaryAthletics.com.
