Lakeland Spoils Angels' Home Opener

Lakeland Spoils Angels' Home Opener

Milwaukee, WI -- Out of the nine matches contested between the Mount Mary and Lakeland College women's tennis teams on Monday, only one was split at one apiece after two sets.  As if that were not enough drama, that match was the final one in need of a resolution for an event  tied 4-4.

That was the situation in the 3rd flight match-up between Mount Mary's Katie Wolk (SR/OSHKOSH, WI) and LC's Maggie Liston.  After Wolk took the first set 6-4, Liston was able to fight off 3 match points in the second set en route to knotting the match with a 7-6 (9-7) win in the second.  With autumn darkness coming over the courts at Nicolet High School, neither competitor was in any mood for a tie.  Play-on they did in a "first to ten" tiebreak that Liston was able to pull out 10-3 giving her the win and Lakeland its 6th victory on the young season (6-1).

For the Blue Angels', it was the team's first loss (1-1), but another sign that the team is primed to make a run at becoming the most successful squad in the program's young history.

Prior to the great battle in the third flight, it was once again Mount Mary's #5 and #6 singles competitors setting a strong early tone.  Both #5 Krista Olson (SO/APPLETON, WI) and #6 Andrea Monacelli (FR) put up "double bagels", defeating their a straight sets victory over Jenna Oberthaler; 6-3, 6-1.

Lakeland kept things close by taking opponents 6-0, 6-0.  Through two matches in the young season, Mount Mary is 4-0 at the 5th and 6th flight levels.

At #4, the Angels' Nina Her (SR/BROWN DEER, WI) notched 2 of the 3 doubles matches with the closest contest coming at #2 where Lison and Oberthaler defeated MMU's team of Kat Reynoso (SR/BROOKFIELD, WI)/Brooke Slamka (JR/RACINE, WI), 8-5.

Mount Mary will travel to south central Wisconsin Saturday to take on Beloit College and Rock Valley September 14th.
