Angels Notch Win in Season-Opener

Angels Notch Win in Season-Opener
River Forest, IL -- The Mount Mary University tennis team defeated Concordia (Chi) University, 4-3, in the squad's 3013 season opener in River Forest on Friday.
With doubles leading off the afternoon action, it was the host Cougars that jumped out to the early 2-1 advantage with wins in 2 of the 3 tandem matches.  A Janel Dignadice win over Briana Lock (SR/MILWAUKEE, WI), 6-3 and 6-4, at #1 singles put the Cougars up 3-1.
Mount Mary came roaring back however posting victories at #2 singles (Ana Mercado (FR) over Emma Renteria 6-2, 6-2), #5 singles (Kat Reynoso (SR/BROOKFIELD, WI) over Margaret Jones 7-6, 6-1), and #6 singles (Krista Olson (SO/APPLETON, WI) over Ashley Soberanis 6-0, 6-1) to take a 4-3 lead.
That seemingly left it up to the third and fourth flights to decide the match.  However, after 3.5+ hours of action, darkness became a factor and both those matches were unable to be completed.

In the third flight, MMU's Katie Wolk (SR/OSHKOSH, WI) won the first set 6-1 over Marthilda Kaipare, but Kaipare fought back for a 6-3 win in set two. The two competitors went back and forth in set three and were on serve, 4-3 Kaipare, when the match finally had to be called.

Likewise, the fourth singles battle between CUC's Elizabeth Steinhoff and MMU's Andrea Monacelli (FR) was called with Monacelli seemingly in control up a set (6-0) and knotted at 5-5 in the 2nd.

The Blue Angels (1-0) will return home in hopes of continuing their winning ways when they take on another Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference oppenent, Lakeland College, Monday September 9th.  That match will take place on the courts at Nicolet High School.
