MMU Tennis handles MSOE, 7-2

MILWAUKEE – It was a picturesque backdrop for one of the Mount Mary University tennis squad's most resounding victories, as the Blue Angels swatted their way to a 7-2 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering Tuesday at McKinley Park.

The Blue Angels got off to a strong start against the Raiders by taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as the teams of Katie Wolk (SR/Oshkosh, Wis.) and Ana Mercado (FR/Grafton, Wis.) won at No. 2 doubles while Briana Lock (SR/Milwaukee, Wis.) and Brooke Slamka (SO/Racine, Wis.) won at No. 3 doubles with matching 8-5 set victories. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Nina Her (JR/Brown Deer, Wis.) and Emily Barker (SR/Oconomowoc, Wis.) battled hard against MSOE's ace Marly Trier and Michelle Roubik, but fell 8-3.

Owning a somewhat surprising 2-1 lead, Mount Mary continued its strong momentum by wining every match from No. 2 through No. 6 singles. Her continued her strong showing in her first season on the courts in a Mount Mary uniform, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, while Mercado overcame a 5-1 deficit to win a 7-5 first-set tiebreak, then polished off her Raider opponent with a 6-4 second set.

Wolk and Andrea Monacelli (FR/Sussex, Wis.) both won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively, while Kat Reynoso (SR/Brookfield, Wis.) swept her final service game with a pair of aces to take a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

Head coach Tom Troast was very pleased with his Blue Angels' performances, both in doubles and singles. And as the tennis squad enters the meat of its fall schedule, he is excited about the prospects.

The Blue Angels will next travel to crosstown rival Alverno Saturday for a 2 p.m. start, returning to the busy lakeshore. Alverno is also hosting Marian that day, playing directly prior to MMU's match against the Inferno.
