MENOMONIE, Wis. - The Mount Mary University tennis team played a match of Biblical proportions Sunday, as the Blue Angels battled the Blue Devils of Wisconsin-Stout. Normally the Sabbath is reserved for the heavenly dieties, but it was the host Devils who dominated the match, beating MMU 8-1.

Coming off a tour of eastern Minnesota, Mount Mary swung by the UW-Stout campus in Menomonie, Wis., to cap off a tennis-filled weekend. And while great tennis experience was attained, the Blue Angels came up on the wrong end of some close matches to fall to 4-5 overall on the year.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Ana Mercado (Grafton, Wis.) nearly pulled off a victory, but fell in a tight 8-6 decision. At No. 3 doubles, senior Briana Lock (Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Brooke Slamka (Racine, Wis.) were dropped in an 8-2 final.

Wolk, this year's team captain, pulled off Mount Mary's lone win of the day at No. 3 singles, defeating Stout's Molly Denney 6-4, 6-1. Mercado, who hit at No. 2 singles Sunday, won the first set 6-4, but dropped the next to 6-3 and 10-8 in the tiebreak. Lock, freshman Andrea Monacelli (Sussex, Wis.) and sophomore Krista Olson (Appleton, Wis.) all managed to win a handful of sets, but fell in 6-1, 6-2; 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-0 decisions respectively.

The Blue Angels will look to finish off what could be a record-breaking season this week with two intra-Milwaukee matchups. Tuesday, MMU will host Milwaukee School of Engineering at 4 p.m. and Thursday it will host Alverno at 4:30. Both matches will be played at Hart Park.

The Blue Angels need just one team win to secure the most in school history, and winning both matchups would record the first winning season in the history of Mount Mary tennis.
