Tennis matches wins record mark, sinks Vikings

MANKATO, Minn. – The Mount Mary tennis team made it three in a row Friday evening, commencing a border battle trip with a 7-2 victory over Bethany Lutheran College.

The Blue Angels began the night with very strong doubles play at No. 2 as senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.) and freshman Ana Mercado (Grafton, Wis.) shut out their Viking opponents 8-0, while senior Briana Lock (Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Brooke Slamka (Racine, Wis.) notched a victory No. 3 doubles 8-2.

Mount Mary continued its stellar singles play by winning five out of the six flights Friday night. Mercado stepped into the No. 2 spot and cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win, Wolk won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and freshman Andrea Monacelli (Sussex, Wis.) picked up a resounding victory at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2.

In the most exciting singles flight of the night, senior Kat Reynoso (Brookfield, Wis.) won a first-set tiebreak to pull out a scrappy 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, while sophomore Krista Olson (Appleton, Wis.) took home a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6.

With the victory, the Blue Angels move to 4-3 on the year, tying the all-time Mount Mary wins record, and are closing in on the team's first ever winning season in school history. With four matches remaining, MMU must win two to secure this record-breaking mark.

The Blue Angels will conclude the Minnesota tour with a five-team scramble-style tournament Saturday at Macalester College , before stopping by Menomonie, Wis., on the way home to take on the Blue Devils of Wisconsin-Stout.
