Blue Angels hold off Inferno in tennis showdown

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Blue Angel tennis team evened its season record at 3-3 overall Saturday afternoon, defeating crosstown rival Alverno College 6-3. It was the first time Mount Mary defeated Alverno in head coach Tom Troast's three seasons at the helm.

The Blue Angels got off to a strong start in doubles competition for the second straight match. Senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.) and freshman Ana Mercado (Grafton, Wis.) cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 2, while senior Briana Lock (Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Brooke Slamka (Racine, Wis.) pulled out an exciting 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Mount Mary carried its momentum into singles play, winning four of the six flights to seal the team win.

Mercado swept her Inferno foe 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Wolk cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Freshman Andrea Monacelli (Sussex, Wis.) mirrored Wolk's efforts at the No. 5 flight with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while sophomore Krista Olson (Appleton, Wis.) pulled out a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 tiebreak at No. 6 singles to pick up her fourth singles victory of the year.

The Blue Angels will next take a weekend trip to the Gopher State to take on three opponents in three days. Mount Mary will battle Bethany Lutheran College Friday afternoon, then head to Macalester College for a five-school individuals tournament Saturday. Sunday, the Angels will swing through Menomonie, Wis., to take on the UW-Stout Blue Devils en route back to Milwaukee.
