ATLANTA – A historic year just keeps getting better for the Mount Mary tennis team, as several Blue Angels were honored at the Great South Athletic Conference Banquet this past weekend.

Mount Mary's Andrea Monacelli (Sussex, Wis.) took home one of the major awards, being named the GSAC Freshman of the Year.

Monacelli was a solid force in the lower flights for the Blue Angels this year--a vital component of one of Mount Mary's deepest squads in school history. In singles action, Monacelli tallied an 8-4 overall record, going an undefeated 4-0 at both No. 5 and No. 6 flights after tournament play. At No. 3 doubles, she also tallied a perfect 3-0 record.

Mariel Herrera of Agnes Scott College (Ga.) was named GSAC Player of the Year and Salem College (N.C.) head coach Kevin Fleck was selected as Coach of the Year.

Two Blue Angels made the All-Conference Team as well. Freshman Ana Mercado (Grafton, Wis.) earned the distinction for her work at No. 2 singles, while senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.) was honored at No. 3 singles.

Mercado and Monacelli also were named to the six-player All-Freshman team.

Wolk, senior Emily Barker (Oconomowoc, Wis.), junior Nina Her (Brown Deer, Wis.) and sophomore Brooke Slamka (Racine, Wis.) each earned All-Academic honors, signifying players with at least a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and a sophomore class standing.

Lastly, co-captain Wolk was the Mount Mary representative on the All-Sportsmanship team.

Mount Mary, which participated in its first ever league tournament, finished the eight-team tournament with a fifth place distinction. After dropping a war of an opening round matchup against Mills College (Calif.), the Angels swept Rust College (Miss.) and Wesleyan College (Ga.) to win the consolation bracket.
