Blue Angels Take Down Muskies In Convincing Fashion

KOHLER, Wis. – Mount Mary University beat Lakeland College in a 9-0 match.

It would start with a solid double showing for Mount Mary University, and a default win in the third doubles set, but the Blue Angels were honed in from the first serve. Ana Mercado (So./Grafton, Wis.) and Shauna Jacobs (Fr./East Troy, Wis.) had a tough match up against Lakeland College's Emily Desjardins (So./Munising, Mich.) and Aimee Thrune (Prairie du Sac, Wis.), but the Navy Halos would hold on in a 7-9 match. Brooke Slamka (Jr./Racine, Wis.) and Nina Her (Sr./Brown Deer, Wis.) won their doubles match 8-2.

Nina Her won her singles compellingly in 6-0, 6-1 match, and Jacobs would do the same. The astronomical play seemed to be contageous, and Andrea Monacelli (So./Sussex, Wis.) wasn't immune. Monacelli played Nicole Dessloch (So./Plymouth, Wis.) from Lakeland College 6-3 in the first set, and the second would be all Monaceli with a perfect 6-0 finish.

The number one singles match would be the event to watch, as Mercado went deep with Desjardins into the third set of the match. Coach Tom Troast, in his fourth season as MMU tennis head coach, was excited to see the Blue Angels pull through big, and was especially thrilled with the play of Mercado, "Ana's [Mercado] finish was thrilling. She held off triple match point, then wins the long tiebreaker to complete the Angel sweep." This marks the fourth win of the season for MMU, but with such a fine number one singles match, coach Troast had to add "that angel [Mercado] has ice water in her veins!"

MMU has a week to prepare to keep this outstanding success going for their next dual match. Bethany Lutheran College will host the match in Mankato, Minn. on Sept. 26 with the contest getting underway at 4:00 pm.
