Winning Ways Continue for Blue Angels Tennis

MANKATO, Minn. – A victory for Mount Mary University tennis today, who was on the road. The Blue Angels beat Bethany Lutheran College 6-3 in Mankato, Minn., the win moves MMU's season record to 5-1.

Ana Mercado (So./Grafton, Wis.) again demonstrated her importance to the squad. For the second straight year, Mercado won both her singles and doubles matches, with partner Shauna Jacobs (Fr./East Troy, Wis.) this season, against BLC. This marks the third straight victory for the duo, as they again started the winning ways during the dual match.

It now seems the winning ways never stop for Krista Olson (Jr./Appleton, Wis.). Olson had wins in both singles and doubles matches, Sydney Dahlstrom (Jr./Marquette, Mich.) partner, during today's meet and that adds to her season streak of eight straight matches without a loss. The singles match for Olson went to the third set, she hung on to win 2-1.

In a two set sweep Brooke Slamka (Jr./Racine, Wis.) defeated Andrea Donley from the Vikings, 6-4, 6-4. This is the fourth straight winning singles match for Slamka, and the win clinched the third consecutive victory for the Blue Angels.

Coach Tom Troast was very encouraged by the late flight victories, "The key to the team win was the singles wins by Krista [Olson] and Brooke [Slamka]. Both matches ended on tiebreakers, both athletes focused on the critical points that brought the match home."

Now it is time for the Blue Angels tennis squad to play UW River Falls. This marks the maiden match between the teams since MMU has joined the NCAA. The game is set to be played in River Falls, Wis. on Sept. 27 at 1:00 pm.
