Blue Angels With Tough Start

Blue Angels With Tough Start

The first dual match for Mount Mary University and the 2015 campaign ended 6-0 in favor of Lake Forest College. The win for the Foresters gives them an early 1-0 record on the season, and leaves the Blue Angels 0-1 going into their home opener against Roosevelt University.

After a 2014 that had been interrupted numerous times due to uncooperative weather, it came as little shock that the first game of the 2015 season was to be moved because of bad weather. As the weather slowed the start of the season, the Blue Angels took a while to get things rolling.

"It was a good beginning match to get the nerves out." Head tennis coach Callie Schroeder continued on that thought, "We went in knowing we were the underdogs, but we played good tennis and made them work for their wins."

The doubles matches went 3-0 in favor of the Foresters, Ana Mercado (Jr./Grafton, Wis.)/Marissa Rechlicz (So./West Allis, Wis.) fell 8-0, Brooke Slamka (Sr./Racine, Wis.)/Amy Gossett (Fr./Franklin, Wis.) finished behind 8-1, and last season's most successful double's team Sydney Dahlstrom (Sr./Marquette, Mich.)/Krista Olson (Sr./Appleton, Wis.) lost 8-3.

The singles' match scores quickly swayed toward the Foresters as they took the top three matches, and the 4, 5 and 6 singles were then called for the unsafe playing conditions of the courts.

Although the Blue Angels were swept, the team is hopeful that their experience today will pave the way for more success in the future. With nearly all new doubles' teams, MMU may take some time to get to know each other. Coach Schroeder, "Our girls got to know their new doubles partners and started to get comfortable on the court!"

A quick start to the season, the Blue Angels will have to turn around in a hurry and get ready to host Roosevelt University Wed. Sept. 2 starting at 6:30 pm.
