Inferno Sweep Blue Angels

Inferno Sweep Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – As the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference season gets underway, Mount Mary University tennis lost 9-0 to rivals Alverno College. The home opener for the Inferno at the Nicolet Tennis Courts makes the Blue Angels 0-3 (0-1) on the 2015-16 season.

The first ever conference event for the Blue Angels was against a team MMU is quite familiar with. The Blue Angels lost in the first dual match last season 6-2, but MMU came fighting back in the second matchup that was cancelled for rain.

This season the Inferno took control in some very close doubles' matches. Ana Mercado (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) and Marissa Rechlicz (So./West Allis, Wis.)  lost to the number one team of Asia Butler-Yeo and Brittanie Ward by way of retirement 4-3.The number two and three doubles' teams kept thing very close as Amy Gossett (Fr./Franklin, Wis.) and Brooke Slamka (Sr./Racine, Wis.) kept things close, but lost 8-3, and Krista Olson (Sr./Appleton, Wis.) and Sydney Dahlstrom (Sr./Marquette, Mich.) fell short 8-4.

Coach Callie Schroeder recognized that the match was "another tough loss" as the welcome to the NACC was not what the team hoped.

The lengthy doubles' matches led to a full sweep of the singles' contests, making the Inferno 1-0 (1-0) in 2015-16. The closest of the matches was in the number five spot where Slamka fought throughout the contest, but came up short against Alverno's Lauren Fisher 6-2, 7-5.

The Blue Angels will not have too much rest as they have a doubleheader Sun. Sept. 6 beginning at 1:00 pm in Madison, Wis. The pair of dual matches will put the Blue Angels up against the NACC's preseason poll champs Edgewood College in game one, and MSOE in game two with the second match starting at 4:00 pm.
