Pioneers Win Opener

Pioneers Win Opener

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Today was the beginning of the Mount Mary University Tennis season. The Blue Angels went off against local foe Carroll (5-2) in a dual match to open the year. The Pioneers took the dual 8-1 as the Blue Angels start off the season 0-1.

Already off to a big start on the season, the Pioneers also got off to an early lead against the Blue Angels sweeping the doubles sets 3-0. MMU, however, led the number one doubles match of Ana Mercado (Sr./Grafton, Wis.) and Amy Gossett (So./Franklin, Wis.) 4-3 until the Pioneers No. 1 doubles turned the tables winning final points and the doubles slot 8-6.

The Blue Angels won their sole dual match point in the No. 1 singles spot as Ana Mercado defeated Megan Wiersma 2-6, 7-5, 1-0. The come-from-behind win gives Mercado a 1-0 record to begin the campaign. This is the first season Mercado began the season undefeated in the number one singles spot.

Amy Gossett put up a 0-6, 2-6 dual in her first singles loss of the season. Gossett held the highest win percentage in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a 4-6 record in 2015.

After the non-conference dual with the Pioneers, the Blue Angels will ramp up their NACC season with a doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran College and Milwaukee School of Engineering. The double dual match is slated for Sat. Sept 10 with a 10:00 AM contest against the Warriors, then a 2:00 PM dual match against the Raiders at McKinley Marina to get the 2016 NACC tennis season underway.
