Blue Angels Take Win

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University volleyball team defeated Emmaus 3-1 Tuesday night at the Bloechl. After the victory against Emmaus, MMU broke a streak of 33 straight losses. In fact, the Blue Angels beat Emmaus 3-2 back in Oct 26, 2013 in their last victory before tonight.

The win moves the Blue Angels to 1-4 on the early season, and gives the Eagles a record of 4-3.

MMU took the very first set in a point trading affair that went 25-22. The next frame went right back to the Eagles 25-16, MMU matched that with a 25-16 win in the third to make the match 2-1.

With the pressure on the shoulders of the Blue Angels, MMU focused on the fourth and final set. First tied at 15 each, the Blue Angels slowly took control. Alli Howard of Emmaus spiked a well-placed set right through the heart of the MMU defense hitting the court and making it a 23-22 game with MMU barely on top.

A timeout at the momentum changing point refocused the Blue Angels as they came out. Payton Hintz (So./Almond, Wis.) led the way with two straight points to take the pivotal victory.

Hintz led the team with 11 kills and also added eight assists to her totals. Julia Terasa (Jr./Waukesha, Wis.) led the assist column with 20. Sarah Amoroso (So./Wauwatosa, Wis.) finished with a deadly .312 killing percentage.

With their first win since 2013, the Blue Angels look to keep this momentum going. A tough task ahead as MMU will host their first triangular of the season with Alverno and Beloit coming to the Bloechl Center Sat. Sept. 19. Game one will get underway at 1:00 pm, live stats and video coverage will be available at mtmaryathletics.com.
