Eagles Clutch Win

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University volleyball team lost 3-0 to visiting Emmaus Bible College tonight at the Bloechl Center. The two teams needed to play to 26 points in the first set in a back-and-forth frame on Parents' Night, but the accuracy from the Eagles attacks led to Emmaus picking up the final two sets.

The first frame saw both teams match nearly every point from their respective opposition. When the Blue Angels grabbed a 4-1 lead, the Eagles came back to tie at 4-4. After Emmaus took the 6-5 lead, the Blue Angels worked their way back to a 19-13 lead.

The Eagles kept on the attack and tied things up at 20-20 in the first set, but the Blue Angels fired back scoring three straight points of their own. After Marissa Tun (Greenfield, Wis.) set fellow senior Lauren Harris (Sheridan, Ill.) up for the 23-20 leading-point, the Eagles came back to score six of the next seven points to take the opening set.

In the second set, the Eagles attacked with a very effective rate. EBC took an early lead in the second by hitting 11 team kills on 22 attacks with one error. After two long streaks from the service line, the Eagles took the set 25-6.

The Blue Angels took an early lead in the third set, but a 7-0 streak by the Eagles that included four service aces from Paulina Velderrain put EBC upfront. The Blue Angels battled right back when Adrianna Nester (Jr./Anaheim, Calif.) dropped a ball between defenders making things 8-7 EBC.

Then the Eagles continued to hit effectively and went on a 17-3 run to take the final set 25-10. EBC hit 10 team kills on 31 total attacks with three errors in the final frame.

Nester led the Blue Angels on offense with four kills on 15 total attacks and 13 digs. Teammate Marrisa Tun led her team with seven assists.

The Blue Angels will return to the Bloechl Center tomorrow morning for the Mount Mary University Tri-Match. Grace Christian University will return from the Blue Angel Tri-Match last weekend to participate in this weekend's tourney. Emmaus will return tomorrow to fill the third spot in the triangular which begins at 10:00 am. Live video and stats for the entire tournament can be found at MtMaryAthletics.com.
