Lakers Outlast Blue Angels

Lakers Outlast Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University volleyball team lost to visiting Silver Lake College by a final match score of 3-0. Although the Lakers grabbed the sweep, the Blue Angels pushed each set to the near maximum as MMU now sits at 1-15 on the year.

The Lakers (9-13) took the initial lead in the first set, but the Blue Angels came right back. Once SLC jumped out 11-7, MMU came thundering right back. The Blue Angels would not let the lead get bigger than four points until midway through the first.

The Lakers went on a quick 3-0 run to make the score 20-14, but the Blue Angels rattled off four of their own to cut the lead down. The two teams finally tied at 23-23, but the Lakers were able to grab the final two points for the opening set.

In the second set, the Blue Angels took the early lead. After going ahead 6-4, the Lakers took a brief lead of their own. The teams continued to trade points while no team could ever stretch the lead over four points.

With a late 8-2 run by the Blue Angels, MMU took the late 21-20 lead. The continued attack and high efficiency from their opponent finally overtook the Blue Angels momentum and following the 24-24 tie, the Lakers again grabbed the final two tallies to win the set in extra points.

When SLC grabbed an early 12-2 lead, many believed the game to be over. The Blue Angels had a different idea in mind, and started to chip away at the large deficit. After a 6-3 run, the Blue Angels got a little closer.

Alexis Levenhagen (Fr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) took control behind the line and helped her team start a 13-0 rally that included three service aces from the freshman. But the Lakers answered right back with a 7-2 run that gave SLC the victory.

Lauren Harris (Sr./Sheridan, Ill.) led the Blue Angels with 11 kills on her 46 attacks. Teammate Adrianna Nester (Jr./Anaheim, Calif.) helped that offense with nine kills on her 48 attacks.

Alessa Nelson (Jr./Rockford, Ill.) led MMU with 27 assists on the day while Marissa Tun (Sr./Greenfield, Wis.) led the team's backcourt with 33 digs.

The Blue Angels return to the Bloechl Center Fri. Oct. 19 at 7:00 pm when they host the Faith Baptist Bible College Eagles. Live stats and video will be made available for the Friday night Pink Out Match. Links for the event can be found at MtMaryAthletics.com.
