MILWAUKEE – Tonight at the Bloechl Center, the Mount Mary University volleyball team defeated the visiting Faith Baptist Bible College Eagles by a match score of 3-0. After their win over the Eagles (12-9) the Blue Angels sit at 2-15 on the season.
MMU grabbed the lead early on against the Eagles. The Blue Angels quickly took the 4-0 lead, then swelled that up to a 9-2 lead. FBBC did not give up down early and stormed back with a quick 5-0 run.
The Blue Angels withstood the rally and continued to add multiple points each service try including a 5-0 run of their own. Then MMU closed out the set 25-17 hitting eight team kills on 51 total attacks.
In the second set, the Blue Angels kept their ground despite the Eagles offensive output. FBBC would lash out 12 team kills on 56 attacks in the set, but the Blue Angels defense kept them in the set. After the Blue Angels fell behind 16-11, MMU rallied with an 8-1 run to grab the late lead.
The Eagles continued to apply pressure, tying up the match at 22 points and 23 points, but the Blue Angels received a timely block assist from Emma Carufel (Fr./St. Francis, Wis.) and Adrianna Nester (Jr./Anaheim, Calif.) to put the set away 25-23.
MMU never trailed in the final set of the night. The Blue Angels quickly grabbed a 3-0 lead, and after Nester took the ball behind the service line again, MMU jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The Blue Angels continued to apply pressure throughout the set with their nine team kills on 31 total attacks in the set and came away with the 25-12 win and their first 3-0 sweep of the season.
Nester led the offensive charge for the Blue Angels with 11 kills on 41 attacks and a team high 25 digs. Teammate Alessa Nelson (Jr./Rockford, Ill.) stirred the offense with a team leading 19 assists. Alexis Levenhagen (Fr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led with three service aces.
