2019 Mount Mary University Cross Country Preview

2019 Mount Mary University Cross Country Preview

MILWAUKEE – This year's Mount Mary cross country team begins their season today at the Tom Barry Invitational. The Blue Angels have been a team dedicated to cutting down their times consistently throughout the year while also taking care of the work in the classroom. While Eugene Miranda enters his tenth season as head coach, this year's team looks to continue that trend under his guidance.

Last year's Blue Angels stuck with their routine of making incremental improvements through the season. After finishing second to last in an 11-team race, the Blue Angels but their noses to the grindstone and made immediate improvements before they went to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe, Concordia Wisconsin.

MMU placed sixth as a team at the Ken Wiedt Classic in Mequon, Wis., and that was the first of three races in a row that the team would finish sixth overall.

Individually, each runner improved by cutting her previous finish time in nearly every race for the remainder of the season. Christina Ishaq ('19) had her best six-kilometer time at the NACC Championship in Aurora, Ill. The now Blue Angel Alum, finished with her season record 25:46.68. Teammates Emily Green (So./Waukesha, Wis.) and Miranda Fluegge (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) each had their respective top times of the season.

As they do nearly every season, the cross country team took care of their most important aspect of the student-athlete life. Six Blue Angels earned a spot on the NACC Scholar-Athlete List. Not surprisingly, the team also came away with the MMU Athletics Team GPA Award for the 2018-19 academic year. (Read more)

This season the Blue Angels return four runners to their squad: Miranda Fluegge, Emily Green, Johnelle Suto (Jr./Enterprise Ore.) and Daniela Torres (Sr./West Allis, Wis.). The Blue Angels also look to add a few more faces to the mix in the upcoming season. (Roster)

This season, the Blue Angels look to continue their usual schedule including their perennial season opener in Green Bay, Wis. at the Tom Barry Invite. MMU will also compete in three separate NACC hosted meets and travel to Kenosha, Wis.to take on NCAA programs from all three divisions of play. (Full Schedule)

This year's team is looking forward to the twists and turns the upcoming season has to offer. With a core of returners and a history of success, the Blue Angels are ready for 2019. For more information on the Blue Angels, check out MtMaryAthletics.com.
